The economy of Costa Rican’s Caribbean in principally devoted to large-scale export banana production and tourism, two industries that are associated with numerous social and environmental problems. Presently, there are a number of community organizations working towards a more sustainable form of development for the region, one which preserves the diverse culture and environment of the region, one that is initiated and controlled by community members, and one that provides social and economic benefits for present and future generations. The Caribbean Education Center was created in order to support and promote this type of development by bringing committed volunteers and visitors into the community as a way of supporting the activities of these organizations. Through the activities offered, the center will educate visitors about the culture and environment of the region and the problems faced by communities. Through interactions with community members and organizations, visitors will obtain a greater understanding of the problems caused by current development models, the need for alternative models, and the role that they can have in creating and supporting these alternatives. The center is located in Hone Creek, a rural farming community situated between the beach towns of Puerto Viejo and Cahuita and the Bribri/ Cabecar Indigenous Reserve, on the Southern Atlantic Coast of Costa Rica. Our location provides individuals with numerous volunteer and research opportunities working in areas such as organic farming, eco-tourism, environmental education, health and social services and sustainable development. |
